Get Ready for Lee County Fair

The Lee County Fair starts on Thursday evening after school. The arts & craft vendors begin setting up and the Youth Fair board has worked for at least a week hanging flagging, banners, cleaning buildings, setting benches, and picnic tables; all in preparation of the Lee County Fair & Charcoal Challenge BBQ Cook-Off.

The community wide event brings together the best of bbq cooking, Texas Country Music, arts & crafts, The Mighty Thomas Carnival, competitive beer and wine making, hot sauce, cobblers, and Senior Citizen activities.

Thursday -  Gates open at 4pm: Arts & Crafts Vendors, BBQ Cook-Off teams are setting up.  Free to enter the fairgrounds. Carnival opens at 6pm with two for one armband specials.  The Mighty Thomas Carnival has rides for all ages. This carnival has been coming to Giddings for the past five years. The Elite Cheer Competition team will perform under the big pavilion their Spring Show.  Then local DJ Jason will take over.

Friday-  Senior Citizen Day is the favorite activity for Friday because we kick off the day with Bingo, followed by LaGrange Roadrunners Square Dancers and Polka Music. Seniors can pick up great information from the sponsor tables that are located around the grounds. BBQ plates are served for a fee of $3. The meal is sponsored by Oakland Manor and LCRA.

Saturday - Starting with the Parade in Giddings around City Park and then continuing out at the Fairgrounds for a fun-filled day.

It is that time of year again! School has started, football is on the horizon and the Texas Word Wrangler Festival is coming to Giddings!

September 12th and 13th the Giddings Public Library will welcome 21 authors to town for this wonderful, culturally rich event.  Grab your book bag, your reading glasses and library card for a day filled with all kinds of interesting topics. The list includes books for every age and every interest.  Some of the authors will visit the local schools to talk to the students about the writing process and the making of a book. We are fortunate to have Dr. Jeff Kerr with his new book about Austin. He was featured in the Austin American Statesman over the weekend.  Plenty of great authors for every type of reader!  You decide who you would like to visit with at this event.

As an added bonus, we are accepting coupons to go in the sponsor bags from Chamber members.  We will even pick your coupons or brochures to make sure we get everything in time.  Coupons, brochures or promotional items are great reminders to our visitors about all the great things to see and do while they are in Giddings.

The Gala event is on Thursday night at the Library! Meet and greet all the authors before for the public event on Friday! Tickets are available at the Giddings Public Library. All proceeds benefit the library programs.

Deal to direct more funds back to parks

    Published in The Bryan Eagle

Officials from three Brazos Valley counties are poised for a big announcement this week regarding an overhaul of the operation of Lake Somerville that could potentially generate hundreds of thousands of dollars for the rural areas.

Representatives from Burleson, Lee and Washington counties will join with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Thursday to sign a cooperative joint management agreement. The agreement, which has been five years in the making, will shift responsibility for some management from two Corps parks touching the lake, Rocky Creek Park and Yegua Creek Park, to a nonprofit group created by the counties -- the Lake Somerville Resource Management Partnership.

The Corps will retain maintenance duties at the park, but the nonprofit will operate the gates and collect the revenues that previously went to the federal government. The agreement will also allow the nonprofit to tap new areas to increase tourism, such as advertising for the parks and contracting with third-party vendors.

Burleson County Judge Mike Sutherland said he expects the nonprofit to take in $500,000 to $600,000 in annual revenue through the agreement. Officials hope that figure will grow even more with extra amenities and advertising. They also plan to expand the nonprofit organization's operations into Burleson and Lee counties.

The money, officials said, will have to be spent on the parks from which the fees are collected.

Some of the initial ideas for park improvements kicked around by Sutherland include educational centers, bathroom improvements, courtesy docks and horse rentals.

The signing ceremony will be open to the public and will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Corps offices at the Lake Somerville Dam. The management transition will go into effect on Oct. 1, and will not affect the nearby parks operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Doug Cox, regional partnership program manager for the Fort Worth District of the Corps, said a similar management agreement with a nonprofit group has only been arranged once prior in the district -- a 2009 agreement with the nonprofit Our Lands & Water Foundation for four North Texas lakes.

He said the agreement will result in more park funds being directly spent on the park.

"It's the wave of the future to keep these parks open and operating," Cox said.

Similarly enthused is Clint Kolby with the Brenham Economic Development Foundation.

"We really take pride that we're taking a regional approach to this," said Kolby, who serves on the nonprofit's board.

He expects the funds to create a ripple effect through the participating counties that will help drive tourists, and their disposable incomes, to Washington, Burleson and Lee counties.

"I think this a good model to use for other places for creating that public-private partnership to work together to create a positive impact on many areas," Kolby said.

ARE YOU IN? How do you spread the news about your products & services?  Join us for the greatest networking opportunity around! Intentional Networking is the process of learning who is doing business in your community. The better acquainted you are with your local business owners and operators, the better you will be able to refer customers to them.  As we all know today, it is not what you know, but who you know.  Your customers are actively searching for the products and services you provide, but when you don’t have what they are looking for, you can make a huge impact on them by sending them to someone you know and trust.  That means, when you refer them to another local business that carries the product they want you are making your customer happy and creating a friend in the industry. Let us help you be part of the IN crowd.  Attend one of our networking events and meet fellow business owners you need to know!
