The Giddings Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the upcoming arrival of one hundred 1928-1931 Ford Model A antique cars to our city.
The Model A Ford Poor Boy Tour brings together enthusiasts from all over Eastern Texas March 15-17th. The Model A was a huge sensation when it arrived in late 1927 following the famed Model T Ford which put the world on wheels but which was hopelessly obsolete by 1927. The Model A boasted 40hp, 4 wheel brakes, safety glass, colorful bodies (No longer “You can have any color you like as long as it’s black” of Model T days), a real transmission, and a price only a few dollars more than the Model T. It is estimated that over a half million of these sturdy cars survive of the 4.5 million produced.
The Best Western serves as the host hotel for the event. Saturday March 16th will be the big day starting with morning coffee at the Chamber of Commerce. All cars will depart by 10am on a driving tour to Lake Somerville and should return by 2pm. A guided walking tour of downtown museums including the 1918 Sterling Silent Movie Theatre under restoration is planned for 2 and 4pm. Model A’s will be seen all around Giddings that day. They will depart for home on Sunday. For information contact the Chamber of Commerce.
